Polishing and Flushing

Polishing Video

Flushing Video

After the tooth is scaled, it still has microscopic fragments of calculus and plaque clinging to it. The surface of the tooth is scratched from the calculus-removing instruments. The tooth is polished to remove these microscopic fragments and scratches using a mechanical polisher and polishing paste. Polishing discourages calculus and plaque from quickly re-forming on the teeth. Free pieces of plaque, calculus, polishing paste and other debris are flushed off the teeth and out of the gingival sulcus. Any debris remaining in this groove will irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed, and may also result in a more rapid re-establishment of plaque on the tooth surfaces.
